How Palworld Breeding Works
Unlocking the Breeding Farm
The Breeding Farm structure unlocks fairly early in the tech tree, but you'll need a base with enough space and the right technology level researched before you can place one. Once unlocked, position it somewhere central on your base — it needs direct access from your Pal storage or ranch area so you can move breeding pairs in and out easily.
What You Need to Breed
Breeding takes three things:
- One male and one female Pal. They don't need to be the same species — in fact, most interesting results come from crossing two different Pals.
- A Cake, made from 5 Flour + 8 Red Berries + 7 Milk + 8 Eggs + 2 Honey. The Breeding Farm won't start without one.
- Time. The pair takes a few real-time minutes to lay an egg once the Cake is placed. After that, the egg needs to be moved to an Egg Incubator, where hatching time depends on the egg's rank — common eggs hatch quickly, while high-rank and legendary eggs take considerably longer.
The CombiRank Formula Explained
Every Pal in Palworld has a hidden internal "rank" number. When two Pals breed, the game runs a simple formula to decide the child:
The child that hatches is whichever Pal's rank sits closest to that calculated number. This is why breeding two very different Pals often produces something unexpected — the game isn't blending their types or elements, it's purely doing rank math. The exception is the list of special override pairs, covered in the next section, which ignore this formula entirely and always produce a fixed result.

Special & Unique Breeding Combos
A small set of pairings ignore the CombiRank formula completely and always produce a fixed subspecies result, regardless of what the math would normally predict.

Best Breeding Combinations for Top-Tier Pals
Best Combos for Legendary Pals
- Jetragon: Requires high-rank Dragon pairs, or Jetragon × Jetragon once acquired.
- Frostallion: High-rank Ice pairs near the top of the rank table.
- Paladius / Necromus: Extreme high-rank pairings, requiring near-legendary parents.
- Shadowbeak: Specific high-rank Dark-type combinations.
Best Early-Game Combos
For players just starting out, low-rank, cheap-to-breed pairs let you unlock the breeding loop and start collecting passive skills without needing rare Pals first.
Focus on early utility Pals to quickly scale base operations and speed up crafting.
Multi-Step Breeding Chains for Hard-to-Get Pals
Some target Pals cannot be reached directly from commonly available parents. In these cases, breed an intermediate Pal first, then use that intermediate for the final pairing:
This chaining approach is essential for reaching several of the highest-rank Pals in the game, since their "ideal" direct parents are rare or hard to catch.
Egg Color Guide
Before an egg hatches, its color and size give away useful clues:
- White / Common Egg: Typically low-rank, common Pals.
- Elemental Eggs: Matches the dominant element (e.g., Blue for Water, Red for Fire).
- Huge / Giant Eggs: Strong signal of a high-rank or legendary result.
Breeding for Passive Skills
Child Pals inherit passive skills from either parent, up to the maximum slot limit.
- Combat-Focused: Pair parents carrying individual attack/defense passives to stack them onto one offspring.
- Work-Speed: Combine work-efficiency passives to dramatically speed up base tasks.
Common Breeding Mistakes & Troubleshooting
Why You Got an Unexpected Child Pal
This almost always comes back to the CombiRank formula — the game performs rank math rather than blending elements. Always verify both parents' individual ranks against the formula.
Same-Species Pairs (Self-Breeding)
A handful of Pals — including select legendaries like Frostallion — can breed with themselves to produce another of the same species for team-building or passive farming.
Frequently Asked Questions
With over 100+ base Pals and subspecies, the number of potential parent pairings runs into tens of thousands, though many collapse to common low-rank results via the CombiRank formula.
Yes, breeding strictly requires one male and one female Pal placed together in a Breeding Farm supplied with a Cake.
It varies by egg rank — common eggs hatch in a short time, while high-rank and legendary eggs take significantly longer in the Egg Incubator.
The CombiRank formula calculates a target rank from both parents, and the Pal closest to that number is produced — unless the pair matches a special override combination.
Yes, use the reverse search functionality in the calculator tool above to select any target Pal and retrieve all valid parent pairings.
